The Carolina Theatre is a historic performing arts complex owned by the City of Durham and managed and operated by the non-profit Carolina Theatre of Durham Inc. The complex includes the last remaining of 13 theaters in downtown Durham.

The Carolina Theatre was saved and partially restored by a group of community volunteers, many of whom are still volunteering and ushering at the theatre today. From 1978 to 1988, the Carolina Cinema Corporation, led by Connie and Monte Moses, Don and Pepper Fluke, St. Clair Williams and Stephen Barefoot, operated the theatre as an independent cinema, the first of its kind in the Triangle. The theater closed in 1988 during construction of the Durham Convention Center and received $7.8 million from the 1986 city/count bond funds for restoration.
