GODFATHERS OF POP, THE SMITHEREENS, SET TO ROCK THE STAGE AT THE CAROLINA THEATRE IN DURHAM

DURHAM, N.C. - Legends of pop-rock, The Smithereens, known for their innovative covers and excellent live performances, are set to take the stage at the Carolina Theatre in Durham on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010. The Smithereens have become legends of 1960s British Invasion style power pop, due to  their unique but familiar blend of mod Britpop with tinges of heavy rock. Tickets are $32, $35, and $27 for star members. Box office hours are weekdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., weekends from 1:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to shows. Tickets are also available by calling (919) 560-3030 or online at www.carolinatheatre.org.

The band was formed by a group of New Jersey classmates in 1980, and quickly became an anomaly in the American college rock scene, eventually solidifying the group as enduring rock icons. The Smithereens play both original songs as well as covers of timeless bands such as The Beatles and The Kinks by using a classic but refreshingly non-imitative musical approach. In the three decades they have performed together, the group has released seven albums, some of which have received gold or platinum status or become Top 40 radio hits. The band recently released "The Smithereens Play Tommy," a cover of The Who's famous rock opera.

The Smithereens perform Thursday, January 14 and Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at the Carolina Theatre in Durham. Tickets are $44, $38 and $39 for star members.
