Howard Hawk's TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT & DARK VICTORY
Howard Hawk's TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT (NR, 1944, 100 min)
Humphrey Bogart stars with Lauren Bacall in this classic film loosely based on Ernest Hemingway's novel. During WWII on the Caribbean island of Martinique, Harry Morgan (Bogart) captains a charter boat and mantains a policy of strict neutrality toward the war. But everything changes when Morgan meets young American cabaret singer Marie Browning (Bacall in her screen debut) and a fugitive leader of the French Resistance who both need a way off the island.
DARK VICTORY (NR, 1939, 104 min)
A young socialite is diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, and must decide whether she'll meet her final days with dignity. Bette Davis' bravura moving-but-never-morbid performance as Judith Traheme, a dying heiress determined to find happiness in her few remaining months remains a three-hankie classic.
