Kathak Indian Classical Dance
Aakriti Kathak Academy presents a journey to North India through Indian classical music and dance. Kathak is a North Indian classical dance form that originated in Hindu temples to depict religious stories and later evolved to entertain the elites in royal courts. Kathak is known for its rhythmic footwork adorned with small bells, expressive facial and body movements, and fast spins.
Aakriti Kathak Academy founder and director, Dr. Kriti Rakesh, aims to preserve and share this historic culture with the community and youth. After growing up in India, where she received her rigorous dance training, Dr. Rakesh has been teaching Kathak and performing in the the Triangle since 2007. She has put on memorable dance performances for renowned artists such as Kavita Krishnamurthy, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Kumar Sanu, ALka Yagnik, and many others
In this program, Dr. Rakesh, with her team of Kathak dancers and musicians, takes audiences on a journey to North India through dances that depict famous Hindu stories in dramatic expression, as well as dances that represent the modern art form with rhythmic footwork and graceful movements all set to melodic HIndustani music for a fully educational and delightful experience.
