Arts Discovery Educational Series

Each year, we present performances designed to complement classroom curriculum in our Arts Discovery Educational Series, as designated by the Department of Public Instruction's Comprehensive Arts Education Essential Standards with specific focus on arts exposure. Our goal is to help engage students through captivating on-stage performances and film presentations that connect with students and foster learning.

Vision: To establish the Carolina Theatre as a field trip destination for performing arts experiences for young audiences and their families.
Education Goals: 
  • Present high-quality performing arts, theater, dance, music and film for young audiences.
  • Enhance teacher awareness of the arts as an effective medium for cultivating student appreciation of creative expression, academic learning and artistic discipline.
  • Provide an affordable field trip destination for performing arts experiences to complement community organizations programming whose focus is to serve families and their children.
  • Promote the arts as a vehicle for greater understanding and respect for all.


Durham Public Schools will be able to attend Arts Discovery Educational Series at NO CHARGE. Seats are limited. Tickets will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  These tickets will ONLY be available from August 5, 2019 at 11 a.m. through August 16, 2019. Please fill out the reservation form for the show you would like your class to attend. 
When do reservations open for Durham Public Schools?
Early reservations will open on August 5th and run through August 16th. Seats are limited and available on a first come first served basis. Once DPS seats are full, your school will be placed on a waiting list for the free DPS tickets.
What happens when my school is on the waiting list?
You have three options.
1)Your class may remain on the waiting list to see if seats become available for that show. You will be notified if this is the case.  
2)You may purchase your tickets by emailing Beth. If you wish to purchase your tickets, reservations will be processed on August 28th in the order they are received.
3)You may cancel your current reservation for a particular performance and choose another show that has DPS free tickets still available. Shows that still have DPS tickets available can be provided upon
If I miss the early reservation, can I still reserve tickets for my class?
Yes. Just note, that if you reserve after the deadline ends, your reservation will be processed in the order it was received.
How will I be notified if my class has tickets reserved?
You will receive an email notification when the reservation has been processed. Reservations do take up to 48 hours to process. If you do not receive an email after 48 hours, please contact Beth at 919-226-8877 or Beth [at] carolinatheatre [dot] org
What happens after my tickets are reserved?
You will receive an email 1 month prior to the show to confirm the total number of attendees.
How many shows can I reserve? 
Each DPS teacher is limited to 3 shows per class.
If my class can no longer attend, what do I need to do?
Please contact Beth at 919.226.8877 or Beth [at] carolinatheatre [dot] org to make any changes or cancel your reservation.

Online registration will open Monday, August 19, 2019 at 11:00AM.

Durham Public Schools can register for a  limited quantity of complimentary tickets beginning on Monday, August 5 –  Friday, August 16, 2019.

Price per person, regardless of age, for all shows is $8; a 7.5 percent sales tax is included in the price.  Reduced prices are available for Title 1 schools that qualify.  A limited number of complimentary seats are reserved for Durham Public Schools.

Paper tickets are not issued for Arts Discovery Educational Series.

Please let us know of any special needs for your group. Wheelchair and specialized seating are available upon request. Assisted hearing devices are also available. For transportation, please provide the number of buses, activity vans, etc. you will be bringing.

When do reservations start for the 2019-2020 season?
Reservations for the 2019-20 season will begin on Monday, August 19, 2019 at 11:00AM.  Durham Public Schools can register starting on August 5, 2019.  
How much are tickets?
Price per person, regardless of age, for all shows is $8; 7.5% percent sales tax is included in the price.  Reduced prices are available for Title 1 schools that qualify.  Limited number of complimentary seats are reserved for Durham Public Schools. 

Do chaperones/teachers/infants have to pay?
Yes.  Schools receive one free chaperone/teacher ticket for every 30 seats purchased. Additional chaperones, teachers or parents can pay at the door on the day of the show. Infants that will sit on a parent’s lap do not need a ticket.

How do I reserve tickets to a show?
Complete online reservation form by selecting the Reservation tab above. The theatre will begin processing reservations mid-August on a first come, first served basis. If you do not receive an emailed invoice by August 31st, please contact Beth at 919-226-8877. Reservations made after mid-August may take up to five business days to process.

When do I pay for my classroom’s tickets?
A 25 percent deposit is due 1 month after the reservation is placed. No seats will be held without deposit, and deposits are non-refundable.  The balance of your order is due three weeks prior to the show.

How long are the shows?
Most Arts Discovery performances are 60 minutes.

How many shows can I reserve?
Each Durham Public school may reserve complimentary tickets to three shows. There is no limit to the number of shows a school pays to attend. 

What happens if school is canceled on the day of my show?
If your school is delayed or canceled due to weather or any other unexpected event, you will receive an account credit good for any remaining show this season, based on availability. The Carolina Theatre of Durham Inc. is responsible for paying artists and performers regardless of attendance, weather or school cancelations and will not be able to issue refunds under any circumstances.

Are study guides available?
Yes.  Almost every Arts Discovery performance at the Carolina Theatre has an accompanying study guide.  Study guides can be found by visiting each program's individual show page.  If you do not see the guide, please select the "show more" link to see the complete show description. Many guide download links are located there.  

Is the theatre accessible to persons with disabilities?
Yes.  Please contact the box office staff to make any necessary arrangements prior to the show.

Where is the theatre located?
The Carolina Theatre is located at 309 W Morgan Street (also known as the Downtown Loop) in the heart of Downtown Durham directly adjacent to the Durham Marriott.  Detailed driving directions can be found here.

What parking facilities are available and where are they located?
Vans and cars may use the Durham Centre pay-parking garage located across the street from the theatre. If coming by bus, please inform the box office of the number of buses that will need parking space. Street parking for buses is governed by the City and is not guaranteed.  Please check with the box office prior to the event to confirm bus parking location.

What time should my group arrive at the theatre?
Please arrive 20-30 minutes before show time.

What happens when my group arrives at the theatre? 
The group should remain on the bus or outside while the group leader checks in with a theatre house manager in the main lobby. Doors open 30 minutes before the show, at which time your group will be directed to their seats. 

Where will my group sit?
Theatre staff will seat students based on grade level and group size. Locations cannot be held for late arrivals.  We request that all teachers and chaperones sit on the ends of the rows so they do not obstruct the view for smaller children seated behind them.

Can my group eat lunch at the theatre?
No. Eating inside the theatre or outside in the plaza is prohibited.  We apologize for any inconvenience.
