Mission: To serve Greater Durham and the Triangle region with vibrant, thought-provoking programs of the performing and cinematic arts in our historic treasure, The Carolina Theatre. We strive to contribute to the cultural and economic vitality of downtown Durham and to delight and educate our children and future leaders.

Vision: To establish The Carolina Theatre as the premier destination for arts education and community engagement programming connecting our live performances with unique opportunities for learning and to engage our diverse communities with powerful arts experiences.

Education Goals: Provide a feeling of welcome and access to Carolina Theatre programming for all segments of the community. Provide opportunities for people of all ages to be exposed to arts experiences at the theater and in other settings (community organizations, schools, etc.) Enhance teacher awareness of the arts as an effective medium for cultivating student appreciation of creative expression, academic learning, and artistic discipline. Create programs to promote the interdisciplinary use of the arts and the integration of it to meet curriculum goals. Promote the use of the arts as a vehicle for greater understanding and respect for cultural, religious, ethnic diversity, as well as differences in sexual orientation, gender and identity. Collaborate with other arts and educational institutions and community organizations to bring rich educational experiences drawing upon the full spectrum of arts presented by the Carolina Theatre.

Each year we present performances designed to complement classroom curriculum and to bring lesson plans to life!
Our goal is to engage our student audiences through captivating onstage performances and to inspire learning outside of the classroom.

Arts Discovery 2016 - 2017 Booklet 

The Arts Discovery Educational Series is designed to supplement your classroom curriculum and bring your lesson plans to life.  Topics include:

  • Math, Science & Health
  • History, Culture & Community

Due to the generosity of the Fox Family Foundation, Durham Public Schools will be able to attend Arts Discovery Educational Series at NO CHARGE. Seats are limited. Tickets will be on First Come, First Serve basis.  These tickets will ONLY be available from August 5, 2016 through August 26, 2016. Please fill out the reservation form for the show you would like your class to attend.

When do reservations open for Durham Public Schools?
Early reservations will open on August 5th and run through August 26th. Seats are limited and available on a first come first served basis. Once DPS seats are full, your school will be placed on a waiting list for the free DPS tickets.
 
What happens when my school is on the waiting list?
You have three options.
1)Your class may remain on the waiting list to see if seats become available for that show. You will be notified if this is the case.  
2)You may purchase your tickets by emailing Rebeka. If you wish to purchase your tickets, reservations will be processed on August 29th in the order they are received.
3)You may cancel your current reservation for a particular performance and choose another show that has DPS free tickets still available. Shows that still have DPS tickets available can be provided upon
 
If I miss the early reservation, can I still reserve tickets for my class?
Yes. Just note, that if you reserve after the deadline ends, your reservation will be processed in the order it was received.
 
How will I be notified if my class has tickets reserved?
You will receive and email notification when the reservation has been processed. Reservations do take up to 48 hours to process. If you do not receive an email after 48 hours, please contact Rebeka at 919-226-8879 or Rebeka [at] carolinatheatre [dot] org
 
What happens after my tickets are reserved?
You will receive an email 1 month prior to the show to confirm the total number of attendees.
 
How many shows can I reserve? 
Each DPS teacher is limited to 3 shows per class.
 
If my class can no longer attend, what do I need to do?
Please contact the box office or Rebeka at 919.226.8879 or rebeka [at] carolinatheatre [dot] org of your cancelation or any change in your reservation.

If your show is performed at multiple days and/or times, please specify which performance you wish to attend.

Please let us know of any special needs for your group. Wheelchair and specialized seating are available upon request. Assisted hearing devices are also available. For transportation, please provide the number of buses, activity vans, etc. you will be bringing.

When do reservations start for the 2016-2017 season? 
Reservations will begin on August 29th.

How much are tickets?
Tickets for all shows are $8 per student. All children must purchase a ticket, regardless of age.  Reduced price tickets are available for Title I schools that qualify. 7.5% sales tax is included in the tickets prices. 

Do chaperones/teachers/infants have to pay?
Yes.  Schools receive one free chaperone/teacher ticket for every 30 seats purchased. Additional chaperones, teachers or parents can pay at the door on the day of the show. Infants under 1 year that will be seating on a parent’s lap can receive complimentary entry but still need get a ticket.

How do I reserve tickets to a show?
There are three ways to reserve tickets to an Arts Discovery event:
1)    Complete online reservation form by selecting the Reservation tab above.
2)    Call the Carolina Theatre box office at 919.226.8879.
3)    Complete the order form attached mail to: Carolina Theatre Arts Discovery Series 309 W. Morgan St. Durham, NC 27701

Reservations may take up to 48 hours to process. If you do not receive an emailed invoice, please contact Rebeka at 919-226-8879

When do I pay for my classroom’s tickets?
A 25% deposit is due 1 month after the reservation is placed. No seats will be held without deposit, and deposits are non-refundable.  The balance of your order is due three weeks prior to the show.

How long are the shows?
Most Arts Discovery performances are 60 minutes.

What happens if school is canceled on the day of my show?
If your school is delayed or canceled due to weather or any other unexpected event, you will receive an account credit good for any remaining show this season, based on availability. The Carolina Theatre of Durham Inc. is responsible for paying artists and performers regardless of attendance, weather or school cancelations and will not be able to issue refunds under any circumstances.

Are study guides available?
Yes.  Almost every Arts Discovery performance at the Carolina Theatre has an accompanying study guide.  Study guides can be found by visiting each program's individual show page.  If you do not see the guide, please select the "show more" link to see the complete show description. Many guide download links are located there.  

Is the theatre accessible to persons with disabilities?
Yes.  Please contact the box office staff to make any necessary arrangements prior to the show.

Where is the theatre located?
The Carolina Theatre is located at 309 W Morgan Street (also known as the Downtown Loop) in the heart of Downtown Durham directly adjacent to the Durham Marriott.  Detailed driving directions can be found here.

What parking facilities are available and where are they located?
Vans and cars may use the Durham Centre pay-parking garage located across the street from the theatre. If coming by bus, please inform the box office of the number of buses that will need parking space. Street parking for buses is governed by the City and is not guaranteed.  Please check with the box office prior to the event to confirm bus parking location.

What time should my group arrive at the theatre?
Please arrive 45 minutes before show time.

What happens when my group arrives at the theatre? 
The group should remain on the bus or outside while the group leader checks in with a theatre house manager in the main lobby. Doors open 30 minutes before the show, at which time your group will be directed to their seats. 

Where will my group sit?
Theatre staff will seat students based on age and grade level on group size and grade level. Locations cannot be held for late arrivals.  We request that all teachers and chaperones sit on the ends of the rows so they do not obstruct the view for smaller children seated behind them.

Can my group eat lunch at the theatre?
No. Eating inside the theatre or outside in the plaza is prohibited.  We apologize for any inconvenience.
