The Carolina Theatre was named the "Best Theater to See an Indie Film in the Triangle" in the 2019 Indy Week Best of the Triangle awards.

On Wednesday, the Carolina Theatre of Durham joined the ranks of Indy Week's 2019 Best of the Triangle with the title "Best Theater to See an Indie Film in the Triangle."

Each year, Indy Week readers vote online for the "Best of the Triangle." Categories range from "Best Trivia Night in Durham County" to "Best Juice Bar in the Triangle" and, of course, "Best Theater to See an Indie Film." Indy reported that over 57,000 people voted in this year's polls, sharing over 365,000 votes in 343 categories.

The Carolina Theatre has received a $5,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation to support its 2019-20 Family Saturday Series, a family-friendly series of affordable performances that attracted hundreds of guests to downtown Durham in 2018-19. The 2019-20 Family Saturday Series season begins on October 12 with an interactive magic show from The Amazing Max.

DURHAM, NC (November 16, 2018) — One of the largest repertory film programs in the country, the Carolina Theatre of Durham's Retro Film Series will mark its 20th anniversary tonight at 7 p.m. with a double-feature of two perfectly creepy, on-brand films: Friday The 13th: Part 2, the first movie the program screened in 1998, and The Shining.

The freshly re-branded weekly showcase, known to fans simply as RETRO, has become an oft-emulated model of film programming, presenting curated cinematic treats from familiar silver screen gems to rarely seen cult classics.
