With many communities across the nation, including Durham, facing Stay-at-Home orders to help fight the spread of Coronavirus, independent film distributor Magnolia Pictures has launched a virtual cinema program -- at-home viewing of first-run films -- specifically designed to support independent theaters like the nonprofit Carolina Theatre of Durham.

Carolina Theatre of Durham Closed To The Public Until Further Notice

By order of Durham Mayor Steve Schewel, the Carolina Theatre of Durham is now closed through April 30 pending further notice. The closure is a precautionary measure intended to help arrest the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19). The administrative and box offices will not be staffed through this time. Please contact us through efan [at] carolinatheatre [dot] org. All live events, rentals, film screenings, meetings and any other public gatherings of more than 10 people are prohibited in the city during this time. We are vigilantly monitoring the constantly evolving situation around the spread Coronavirus (COVID-19) and will continue to do so.We are following the direction and best practices recommended by official local, state and federal agencies, including Durham County Public Health Department, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC), all of whom have helped us with the precautionary measures below.

Carolina Theatre Named 2019 Best of The Triangle by Indy Week Readers

The Carolina Theatre was named the "Best Theater to See an Indie Film in the Triangle" in the 2019 Indy Week Best of the Triangle awards.

On Wednesday, the Carolina Theatre of Durham joined the ranks of Indy Week's 2019 Best of the Triangle with the title "Best Theater to See an Indie Film in the Triangle."

Each year, Indy Week readers vote online for the "Best of the Triangle." Categories range from "Best Trivia Night in Durham County" to "Best Juice Bar in the Triangle" and, of course, "Best Theater to See an Indie Film." Indy reported that over 57,000 people voted in this year's polls, sharing over 365,000 votes in 343 categories.
