Get out your calendars and save these dates! We’ve just confirmed two new shows in our Star Series for October! John Hiatt comes to the Carolina on October 24th and The Jayhawks will be here on October 26th!  Tickets for both shows go on sale on Friday, August 5 at 10 a.m.

Renovation Update Week Seven

Welding.  It’s done.

Welding.  It’s done.  All of the rebar in both cinemas was finally welded together last week, and the concrete trucks were here bright and early on Monday morning.  The handicapped seating areas have both been poured extending the seating area substantially. We hope to have a look at the companion seats that will be installed in the next week or so, and I’ll post a picture as soon as that happens.

Renovation Update - Week Six

Paint!

Paint!  I just took a picture of the new paint color that’s just beginning to go on the walls in Fletcher Hall.  It’s gold and very similar to the color that we all know and love.  The only difference is that there will not be a faux finish.   The gold is a warm lovely color, and we really appreciate that it is low VOC.

The Monolith in the cinema lobby has been demolished. Jamin was sad to see it go.  We’ll all miss looking at Jim’s great vintage posters and other movie swag, but now there’s a lot more room and light in the lobby.

NCGLFF 10-Passes & single tickets on sale now!

We're counting down the days until the opening of the 16th Annual North Carolina Gay & Lesbian Film Festival!

Renovation Update - Week Five

Skeletons.  Haven’t found any yet, but we’re seeing a lot of bare walls and a whole lot of plaster repairs throughout the building.

Renovation Update - Week Four

I wish we had something new and shiny to show you, but we are still in the early stages of the renovation and most of what is happening right now is just plain old hard work. We’ve heard a lot of major noise from Cinema One today where work is underway to enlarge and extend the concrete seating pad so we can install new seating that is ADA compliant.

We’ve heard a lot of major noise from Cinema One today where work is underway to enlarge and extend the concrete seating pad so we can install new seating that is ADA compliant.  We’ll also be installing some new fixed companion seating on the first row next to wider spaces that can accommodate various size wheelchairs and scooters.

Renovation Update - Week Three

We love the sound of construction in the morning!

We love the sound of construction in the morning! The renovation crew usually arrives around 6:30 a.m. and work begins before we start our day. Yesterday, the last of the wood shelving was removed from the former video store area. It’s amazing how much bigger that space looks! Soon it will be transformed into the first part of our history exhibit called A Century Downtown and will be the launching point for a self-guided tour of the building.

Renovation Update - Week Two

It’s been fascinating to watch the crew install scaffolding in Fletcher Hall this week.

It’s been fascinating to watch the crew install scaffolding in Fletcher Hall this week.  Our sloped floors and really tall ceilings are quite a challenge, and I’ve noticed that the scaffolding sways a bit as the workers continue to build it.  This is definitely not a job for acrophobes (like me)!

Renovation Update - Week One

Our beloved mascot Biff the Movie Dog has a new job! He’s now Biff the Safety Dog, and he’s garbed with all of the appropriate attire to get through the renovations totally unscathed.

Our beloved mascot Biff the Movie Dog has a new job! He’s now Biff the Safety Dog, and he’s garbed with all of the appropriate attire to get through the renovations totally unscathed. It’s day three, and so far, Bob, Jamin, Carl and I have gone through our safety training and are wearing our gold hard hats. It’s amazing to learn about the many precautions that are necessary to keep both workers and staff safe during the entire renovation process.
