Civil Rights Exhibit Tours Scheduled For February

Members of the Carolina Theatre’s Civil Rights Exhibit Committee will host free tours of the theatre’s “Confronting Change" exhibit in February in commemoration of Black History Month. The tours will allow visitors to view the museum-style exhibit, which is dedicated to community members who helped desegregate the Carolina Theatre through protests in the early 1960s.

Committee members who helped develop the exhibit will be present during designated hours to narrate the story of these historic protests to visitors. The special hours for the hosted tours of the "Confronting Change" exhibit are:

  • Monday, February 1 from 3-5 p.m.
  • Tuesday, February 16 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • Friday, February 19 from 5-7 p.m.
  • Monday, February 22 from 12-2 p.m.

In 2013, the Carolina Theatre asked a committee of dedicated community members who were involved in Civil Rights era protests in Durham to assemble, curate and produce the "Confronting Change" exhibit, which is permanently located on the third level of the venue. The display, which was made possible by donations from PNC Bank and other generous donors, opened in February 2014.

During the sessions above, the members of the theatre’s Civil Rights Exhibit Committee, many of whom participated in the actual desegregation of the Carolina Theatre, will be able to tell first-person stories of the historic protests — and resolute protestors — who helped desegregate the city-owned theatre via a landmark court case in 1963.

Guests who arrive at the venue at the times listed above will be greeted by a theatre staff member, asked to sign in, and then led to the exhibit where committee members will provide information on the display and tell its important story.

In word and in deed, these dedicated committee members have created a lasting monument to the important changes made in Durham during the Civil Rights era and ensured that citizens remember the hard work done to end the theatre’s segregationist policies through protest and litigation.

As always, guests who are not able to view the exhibit during the designated times above are welcome to do so by appointment during the Box Office hours of 11 a.m.- 6 p.m. from Monday through Friday. Interested parties may contact Carolina Theatre Guest Relations Representative Rebeka Todd at (919) 226-8879 to arrange an appointment.
