Cinemas Closed Mar. 29 - Apr 2 For Seat Installation
Remember when you kindly pledged funds on Kickstarter to help the Carolina Theatre get cushy new seats for its cinemas? Well, there was a catch: the cinemas must close for a few days for seat installation.
The cinemas at the Carolina Theatre will be closed from Sunday, March 29 through Thursday, April 2 while crews install new, high-backed maroon seats made possible when 611 supporters pledged $61,805 to a fundraising campaign launched by Carolina Theatre of Durham, Inc., the nonprofit that operates the city-owned historic venue, earlier this year.
The amount pledged by supporters covered the entire estimated $60,000 cost of the project. The remainder of the pledged funds will be used for the painting of the cinema floors prior to seat installation.
After the cinemas' final scheduled film on Saturday, March 28, no additional movies will be screened in the movie houses until the Irwin Seating Company has installed a total of nearly 300 chairs in the theatre's Cinemas 1 and 2 combined. Supporters who pledged $49 or more to the theatre’s new seats Kickstarter campaign have been invited to attend special preview screenings before the cinemas open to the general public.
The cinemas will officially re-open for evening movie showings on Friday, April 3.
The Civil War Film Series screening of The Red Badge of Courage scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31 in the theatre’s 1,000-seat Fletcher Hall will go on as planned.
